Gun vs. Sword

The new Indiana Jones movie opens May 22, but I can almost guarantee you there won't be a scene in that film as good as this! Everytime my dad sees this part of Raiders of the Lost Ark he laughs out loud...and so do I!

Interesting note about this scene... the man with the sword, a world class swordsman, was hired by Steven Spielberg.

The first take had Indiana Jones and the swordsman in a long drawn out fight scene.

The second take Harrison Ford said to the Spielberg, "I've got a gun, why don't I just shoot him?" So they filmed the scene with Indy just shooting the guy.

When the film was being edited George Lucas and Spielberg laughed hysterically at the "just shoot him" scene and put it in the film.

Unfortunately they did not tell the swordsman, and he found out that the longer fight scene had been cut during the film's premiere.

Hi Donald,

Yah, I was watching 2 of the 3 Sunday. Missed Last Crusade, but I'm sure I will see it again before the 22nd.

Hi NC,

Thanks for the visit! I enjoy your blog too!

Hey Angel,

Glad you liked it! I think Indiana Jones would know how to fight the War on Terror!

Hi Pinky,

I can't wait for the 4th one to come out. I hope it's as good as the first!

I love that!

You know the REAL star of the new Indy movie is Ford's makeup artist...

EDGE said...

Brooke,

Yep, he's getting up there!

Good point, Brooke!

Edge..this is fantastic! I've never been a fan of action films (ya, I'm ducking...!!), but this scene got me laughing out loud. Thanks (and thanks for coming by!)

it's like what the Iraq war SHOULD have looked like, no?!!! :-)

Z,

I couldn't have said it better myself!!!

BWAHAHAHAHA! I haven't seen that in ages.

What a lesson for our times, huh?

You know, a scene like that in today's movies would probably insult the entire Islamic world. I wonder if it would be edited out in the name of political correctness (AKA, dhimmitude).

AOW,

Yah, I bet they would take it out if they could. Kinda of like when they released the new Star Wars movie and had Greedo shoot Han first in the bar scene...

Maybe that's too much nerd early in the morning. :O)

Nanc,

I'm giving up on you. You will never be a big Star wars nerd like me! I know that's disappointing to you!

The whole reason that Harrison Ford improved this is that he was sick as a dog and not up for more takes of the long fight scene. A classic scene for sure!!! Another interesting fact about this movie is that Indiana's LARGE friend Sallah was played by John Rhys-Davies who later played the DWARF Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was actually the tallest of the actors which goes to the credit of the camera crew and special effects people.

Frank Fam,

I haven't heard that one, but I'll take your word for it!
