Blast from the Past (FOX 1999)

My parents grew up in the 1950's. I always love to go through their old yearbooks and see the kind of clothes they wore, how their hair was cut, and what kind of cars they drove. Though they were labeled "rebels" who drove their cars just a little too fast and smoked cigarettes a little too much, my folks look back at that era with so much happiness and fond memories.

Now haircuts go from conservative to the totally bizarre. It's not how fast your car is it's what kind of sound system do you have? Sex and violence have replaced values seen on television and movies, and sadly that way of life is all but gone.

But what if someone from that era came to 2009? Could their values still work into today's anything goes society?

The Edge Conservative Movie of the Week, Blast from the Past starring Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone, has made National Review's The 25 Best Conservative Movies of the Last 25 Years. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised to see this film make NR's prestigious list. Blast from the Past is funny movie I think the whole family will enjoy! Here is the movie review from film critic James Bowman...

Revolutionary Road is only the latest big-screen portrayal of 1950s America as boring, conformist, repressive, and soul-destroying. A decade ago, Hugh Wilson’s Blast from the Past defied the party line, seeing the values, customs, manners, and even music of the period with nostalgic longing. Brendan Fraser plays an innocent who has grown up in a fallout shelter and doesn’t know the era of Sputnik and Perry Como is over. Alicia Silverstone is a post-feminist woman who learns from him that pre-feminist women had some things going for them. Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek as Fraser’s parents are comic gems.

Here is the trailer...

sounds great, Edge..thanks.
Met a Hollywood writer who got a gig writing for a producer, until the producer told him to write scripts which denigrate the American family...this is the truth..the guy QUIT on the spot.
That was a few weeks after another producer had him to the house in the Hollywood Hills only to ask "So, you're gay, right" "NO..and I'm OUTTA here".. Nice, huh? (not)

Apparently, to Hollywood, films like THE HOUR, American Beauty and Revolutionary Road are the REAL way of looking at family life and Leave it To Beaver is hooey.

Not at my house growing up...yours?
It's harmful and it should stop. Nice to know your film made the list. !!

Brooke,

It's a cute comedy that I'm sure you will like...though I think they try to make fun of the old ways of doing things, the truth is there. Our society today has lost its way and we need to get back to old fashioned values.

Z,

Glad the Hollywood writer stood up for what he believes and hope he can catch a break out there in LALA land.

When will the libs realize if they want to make money and make a film that adults and children will cherish for years that it must be a positive story. I never understood films like American Beauty and never saw Revolutionary Road.

I'm glad these films films were made however or what good would a conservative movie blog be?

Edge, it was the Week From Hell, so I'm late to the party here. But this is one of our favorite films. Brooke, you're in for a real treat.

Love the dance scene.

Help me out, Edge. Our local hippie theater is showing Plan 9 from Outer Space. Is it possible for them to ruin it?
