Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Warner Bros. 1991)

One of the greatest misconceptions about the story of Robin Hood is that "he stole from the rich and gave to the poor!" Well, that's only partly true...especially when you consider why the people were poor.

Government.

Therefore, Robin Hood was a great conservative story, and also a pretty good movie starring Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

After being captured by Turks during the Crusades, Robin of Locksley and a Moor, Azeem, escape back to England where Azeem vows to remain until he repays Robin for saving his life. Meanwhile, Robin's father has been murdered by the Sheriff of Nottingham and when Robin returns home he vows to avenge his father's death. Even though Marian, his childhood friend, cannot help him, he escapes to the Forest of Sherwood where he joins a band of exiled villagers and becomes their leader. With their help he attempts to cleanse the land of the evil that the Sheriff has spread.

The Untouchables (Paramount 1987)

I love this movie, and I think you will too (if ya' haven't seen it yet!) Next to Open Range, this may be Kevin Costner's best film.

I guess you could say it's in the same spirit of High Noon, though Costner's character Elliott Ness gets at least some help to fight Al Capone's ruthless gang. The people of Chicago love the benefits Capone has brought businesses during Prohibition, but also live in fear of his brutal thugs and terror attacks across the city.

The only ones who will stand up to the infamous mobster are ridiculed by there own and terrorized by Capone's henchmen.

1920's prohibition Chicago is corrupt from the judges downward. So in going up against Al Capone, Treasury agent Eliot Ness picks just two cops to help him and his accountant colleague. One is a sharp-shooting rookie, the other a seen-it-all beat man. The four of them are ready to battle Capone and his empire, but it could just be that guns are not the best way to get him.

The Untouchables is a classic good vs. evil film...but asks a simple question that so many people have a hard time aswering...which side are you on?

Open Range (Universal 2003)

Folks, sometimes bad guys...just need their asses kicked...and kicked hard! In what is probably Kevin Costner's best movie, Open Range is a classic Western set in Montana. The underlying plot revolves around the range wars of the late 1800s. These wars were a conflict between cattlemen who believed in free access to water and grass for everyone, and land barons who used barbed wire to fence off their empires, while denying access to the free-range cattlemen who were moving their herds.

Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall) is a free-range cattleman and Charley Waite (Kevin Costner) is his younger partner. Waite is a former Civil War soldier and gunslinger.

The story involves the confrontation between Spearman and greedy land baron Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon) and corrupt Sheriff Poole for control of Spearmans herd and his right to live the life he has always known.

The film ends with a dramatic gunfight between Spearman and Waite and Baxter and a group of his heavily armed thugs. Seeing the fight coming many of the people in the town flee into the surrounding hills.

Open Range is an outstanding example of a unique American film genre. Clear in its old-fashioned values, it is a beautifully filmed, well acted and loyal to its historic traditions.

If you like guns, you'll like this movie... a whole lot!
