Evelyn (United Artists 2002)

Without knowing it, I guess I'm keeping the single parent theme for movies of the week (Last week was a similar movie called Trouble Along the Way)!

What would happen if the government came to your house and said your parenting skills really suck and we're taking your kids? I'm betting most of you would not just hand them over. Well, neither would Desmond Doyle, an Irish single dad who took on not only Ireland's Government but the Catholic Church to bring his children home.

Here is the movie summary from Internet Movie Database...

Desmond Doyle is devastated when his wife abandons their family on the day after Christmas. His unemployment and the fact that there is no woman in the house to care for the children, Evelyn, Dermot and Maurice, make it clear to the authorities that his is an untenable situation. The Catholic Church and the Irish courts decide to put the Doyle children into Church-run orphanages. Although a sympathetic judge assures Desmond that when his financial situation reverses, he will be able to get his children back; money is hard to come by. During that time, Evelyn and her brothers suffer the abuses of living in orphanages while Desmond struggles to secure finances. Now he must battle the courts to get his children back.

Fighting government and power at the highest levels makes Evelyn the Edge Conservative Movie of the Week!

Here is the trailer...

I'm not a big fan of Irish music...maybe you guys are...

I just put this near the top of my Netflix queue. This looks to be a GREAT film!

Thanks for the recommendation, Edge.

I should be watching Evelyn in a little over a week. I first have to preview a copy of King Lear to see which version would be most suitable for my literature class.

I love Pierce Brosnan and so admire him for how he stood by his first wife when she was dying of cancer. Brosnan put his film career on hold to take care of his wife.

AOW,

You'll like this one! Right up your alley!

Edge, you have hit one out of the park with this one. It is the only pro-dad film I've seen since my crap divorce, and took my kid to see it with me. The only one with a pro-man point of view.

I love this movie!

I am a Pierce Brosnan fan via 007, but I like his other stuff, too. Check him out in Laws of Attraction. It's another good one with him and Julianne Moore.

Okay Edge, question for you - what are your thoughts on captions and subtitles?

Thanks, Edge. It's right up my alley too and although I'm not Irish I do enjoy Irish music! :)

Cappy,

Thanks! It's definitely that!

Salubrina,

I'm not a huge fan of them, but I there are a few foreign language films I have reviewed on my blog before that had those (one was German the other Russian). Why? Do you have a film in mind?

Gayle,

Just never could get into it that much...and I'm half Irish. ;O)

In the queue!

I'm loving the Irish music... It's in my blood! I force my hubby to suffer through hours of The Dubliners every St. Paddy's day! :)

Looks great, Edge!
This one has some great actors in it!
Ever given The Chieftans a chance? They're just right on a cold, foggy day. I'm part Irish, too.
It's my goal to go there some day.

Brooke,

I hope your husband drinks a lot on that day. That's about the only way for me to listen to it! ;O)

Pinky,

Never heard of those guys, but I would like to visit Ireland some day too!

oooh! road trip...

umm, transcontinental flight trip! :-)

IRELAND, baby!

as for subtitles....hehehe, what i meant was, subtitles for english movies when viewing them with a poor, deaf schlub like myself who needs them to follow along. :-)

some friends that i have absolutely cannot stand it when i want the subtitles on a movie. others are able to handle it. i guess the more accuate term would be closed captioning.

as for actual foreign films, my faves are crouching tiger. hidden dragon and monsoon wedding. i haven't seen too many foreign films myself, so that's a pretty sad list i'm afraid.
