Cast Away (Dream Works SKG 2000)

First off, let me welcome you all back for another year of great conservative films! I hope everyone had a great Christmas, some time off, and a great New Year!

Some folks, well...just didn't get this movie. They thought it was too dull or slow. However, if you are into survival movies (such as I am) I think you will enjoy Cast Away with Tom Hanks.

After FedEx systems engineer Chuck Noland is ripped out of his hasty life by the clock in a plane crash, he finds himself alone on the shores of a tropical island. First, frustration gets to him and then he realizes how little his chances are to ever get back to civilization. Four years later, Chuck has learned very well how to survive on his own: mending his dental health, catching fish with a spear, predicting the weather with a self-made calendar. A photograph of his girlfriend Kelly has kept his hopes alive all these years. Finally, Chuck takes the opportunity to take off for home: He sets off on a wooden raft with a sail that has washed ashore.

Keep in mind folks...there is no government there to bail ol' Tom out on this island. No "hope and change" just sand, coconut trees, and whole hell of a lot of water. Once his character realizes ain't nobody coming to pick him up...he has to take it up a notch.

So why do I like these kind of movies? I just want to be the guy on the island that can say...Hey y'all! I saw this in a movie once! Wouldn't that be cool? I mean to totally find a neat way to catch fish, or make a compass, or build a raft?

Saving Private Ryan (Paramount 1998)

Saving Private Ryan is hands down the greatest war movie ever made...period. So many times I have pointed out in my blog, liberal actors and directors (such as Tom Hanks and Stephen Speilberg) can make the greatest conservative movies ever made. This film is no different.

Ever wonder why that is? It's easy, really. Conservative theme movies sell. Go to Blockbuster someday and look to see how many people rented Milk this weekend. Not many.

However, when you talk to people about greatest movies of all time, Ryan is usually close to the top of everyone's list! If you haven't seen it, where the heck have you been?

This movie has everything a conservative would like in movie! Honest to God heroes, American sacrifice and patriotism.

During WWII, Chief of Staff, General Marshall is informed that three of a woman's sons have been killed and that she's going to receive the notifications of their demise at the same time. And when he learns that a fourth son is still unaccounted for, the General decides to send a unit to find him and bring him back, despite being told that it's highly unlikely that he is still alive and the area that he was known to be at is very dangerous. So the unit consisting of 8 men are sent to find him but as stated it's very dangerous and one by one, each of them are being picked off. Will they find him and how many of them will still be alive.

Forrest Gump (Paramount 1996)

Some of the best conservative movies...are just plain accidents folks.

If you've been a fan of this blog for awhile now, you've realized some of the flicks I review also have some of the biggest lib actors and actresses...! Hollywood really wants to make fun of values, God, and patriotism, but most of the films that have any success at the box office just don't reflect their negative values. As a matter of fact (leading up to our movie of the week), while searching the web I cam across this.

A man with a low IQ has accomplished great things in his life and been present during significant historic events - in each case, far exceeding what anyone imagined he could do. Yet, despite all the things he has attained, his one true love eludes him. "Forrest Gump" is the story of a man who rose above his challenges, and who proved that determination, courage, and love are more important than ability.

"Tom Hank's earnest and realistic rather than satirical portrayal of Gump's retardation unintentionally ennobles him and his values in contrast to silly and selfish but oh so much smarter leftists."

Hey...sounds good to me! Forrest Gump is the Edge Conservative Movie of the Week!

It still cracks me up when he is a little kid and the expression on his face when his braces break off!

Charlie Wilson's War (Universal 2007)

Now I know what you're thinking.

Hanks? Roberts? Conservative movie? HA! Right Edge, keep on typing.

Or you might be thinking,

Wasn't Charlie Wilson a Democrat? I mean a REAL liberal Democrat?

Yep, he sure was...unless he was dealing with Afghans and Soviets...then for some reason he turned into George W. Bush (well...sort of). Below is the movie review from IMDb.

"Good-Time Charlie" Wilson, a flawed and fun-loving Congressman from the piney woods of East Texas, deftly operates the levers of power to funnel money and weapons to the Mujahedin of Afghanistan following the Soviet invasion of their country in late 1979. Charlie finds assistance in the oddest of places -- a renegade CIA agent whose outsider status and womanizing ways endears him to Wilson; a Houston socialite who leads Wilson to the cause; the willing Pakistani dictator fascinated by the socialite; the Israelis who modify and manufacture Soviet weapons to maintain the wink-and-nudge illusion of American neutrality; and the women -- ooh the women!

Can you picture an Obama or a Clinton taking these kind of risks? Heck, I can't think of many Republicans today that would! Think what the world would be like if Wilson didn't act. What if he just said it's not important, or the ever popular there's no way we can win this fight? But he did and that is why Charlie Wilson's War is Edge's Conservative Movie of the Week!

Volunteers (HBO 1985)

Usually the Cold War is not a funny topic, unless you've seen the Tom Hanks and John Candy classic Volunteers. The funny thing is most people I've talked to have never even heard of this film, let alone seen it. So more than likely you are in for a big treat!

Here is some interesting trivia I found on IMDb. Tom Hanks and 'Rita Wilson' met while filming this movie and married three years later. Rita Wilson originally met Tom Hanks in 1981 on the set of "Bosom Buddies" (1980) when she guest-starred as Peter Scolari's Satan-worshiping girlfriend. But their relationship wasn't kindled until they were reunited on the set of this movie. Here is the movie summary!

Lawrence is a rich kid with a bad accent and a large debt. After his father refuses to help him out, Lawrence escapes his angry debtors by jumping on a Peace Corp flight to Southeast Asia, where is assigned to build a bridge for the local villagers with American-As-Apple-Pie Washington State Grad Tom Tuttle and the beautiful and down-to earth Beth Wexler. What they don't realize is that the bridge is coveted by the American traitors, a local Communist force, and a powerful drug lord. Together with the help of At Toon, the only English speaking native, they must fight off the three opposing forces and find out what is right for the villagers, as well as themselves.
