City of Ember (Paramount 2008)

Who would have guessed it?

Bill Murray?

Bill Murray has starred in more conservative movies than any other star according to MY blog (which as we all know is the first and last name of conservative movies). The Lost City, Ghostbusters, Stripes, and now City of Ember!

He should rank with all of the great right-wing Hollywood royalty: Ronald Reagan, John Wayne, Charlton Heston and Jimmy Stewart. And wouldn't you know it? He teams up with two of Hollywood's biggest libs Tim Robbins and Tom Hanks (producer) of this week's conservative movie. Ya gotta love it!

We all trust our government...right? The all knowing all caring government is always right and we are always wrong. That's the premiss of this week's film City of Ember.

Would you like to live in a state where your government strays from historic values and teachings that work? Or where your government picks out your child's future? Or tells you lies when your world is slowing being destroyed?

Ohhhh.

Hmmmm.

Perhaps you should just read this review from IMDb...

Ember is a city built to last 200 years from the Earth Destroyed by Blobs Humans Aliens called "Drei" . The builders of Ember left instructions to the mayors in a box that would open by itself. Unfortunately, one of the mayors was lazy and tossed the box into a closet, where it was forgotten for generations.

The year is 2416 A.D. After the Earth's destruction. Lina Mayfleet, and Doon Harrow are two children in Ember who find themselves on a mission to save their dying city. The city's lights are beginning to flicker and food supplies are running out.

Doon lands a job at the Pipeworks where he wants to try to repair the failing generator. Lina's job is simple - she is a messenger, but she soon finds herself in over her head when she discovers the box of instructions left by the builders so long ago.

Doon and Lina find themselves on a wild adventure when they discover the way out of Ember, but corrupt officials and a treacherous mayor stand against their wish to save the city. With courage and heart they brave the darkness - all to help their fellow citizens escape the dying city.

If you have a kid and want to teach him/her some early political conservative values, folks this is the film for your family! I highly recommend City of Ember and welcome your comments when you see this film.

This could be one of the classics your kids will remember!

The Lost City (Magnolia Pictures 2005)

I don't know what it is about Bill Murray but this is the third film he has appeared in Edge's Conservative Movies (See also Ghostbusters, Stripes). You would think an actor like John Wayne, Charlton Heston, or Jimmy Stewart would have this early honor, but no the award goes to...Carl from Caddyshack. I think everyone will have to admit he did a wonderful job in the film we're about to review.

As we all know (or should know) communism is a REALLY bad idea. Everywhere it has been tried it has failed...miserably. This week's film The Lost City tells the story of a wealthy Havana nightclub owner named Fico (played by Andy Garcia) who is from an upper-class family living in Cuba during the Communist Revolution of the late 1950's.

The transition between the cruel dictatorship of Batista and the revolution rips the proud family apart with Fico's three brothers siding with Che Guevara and his army of red goons. Unfortunately, things don't turn out to well for Fico's brothers. Two are killed after they and others attempt to assassinate Batista in his palace and the last one commits suicide after the revolution. One of the brothers tells Fico to watch over his wife if anything should happen to him.

Well, let me think about that for a minute, bro...

...OK.

The brother's wife is played by actress Inés Sastre and as you can plainly see she hit every limb falling off the babe tree! So Fico falls for her, but when the commies take over they use Sastre as the Widow of the Revolution making her feel special and giving her a prominent role in their new left-wing government.

Bill Murray plays a supporting role as The Writer who is a comedian and friend of Fico's and performs in his club. He provides comic-relief during the story. Dustin Hoffman is also in the film, playing the role of mob boss Meyer Lansky.

Later in the film, Fico begins to feel the pinch from the new regime after they take over his nightclub. They tell him what instruments he can and can't play, because after all folks government knows best right? He's forced to leave Cuba for New York, leaving his parents behind and the woman he loves who now is a true believer that Castro has the answers for their failing country.

This movie shows the harshness of government and the complete power that it can demand and manipulate over people. Make no mistake about it...Batista was a jerk. But like so many other jerks, the Shah of Iran for instance, they were America's buddies. Looking back at history we should have recognized that this was a problem and if Batista was removed could he be replaced by a government that was still friendly to us? I guess now we'll never know.

Here are some other interesting facts about The Lost City. Andy Garcia, who is from Cuba and directed this film, had the script written 16 years ago but could not find a Hollywood Studio to support it. Weird. While he was writing the script he was going to play the role of the youngest brother, but age caught up with him and he played the lead role.

Here is the trailer from the film.

Stripes (Columbia 1981)

So I'm having lunch today talking about my blog and my buddy brings up the movie Stripes and then it hits me! THAT'S IT! That should be the Edge Conservative movie of the week! I mean where else do you hear lines like this...

We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans. With a capital "A", huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts. We're soldiers, but we're American soldiers! We've been kicking ass for 200 years! We're 10-and-1!
After losing his job, girlfriend, and apartment John Winger (Bill Murray) feels that he needs to reevaluate his life and get back into shape...and he thinks the military has all the answers. So he convinces his friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) that they both should join the United States Army.

Thinking this experience will be like a few days at a health spa, the boys instantly cross hairs with the crusty Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates). Unfortunately for Hulka he has his hands full with other screw-ups in the regiment such as Dewey 'Ox' Oxberger played by the late John Candy. Murray's character eventually becomes the unofficial platoon leader and leads the misfits to a memorable graduation!

Oh and did I mention they kick some Commie Red ass at the end? Good flick, if you haven't seen it, rent it!

You know...I'm stuck in a dead end job...hmmmm...

How's it goin', Eisenhower?

Ghostbusters (Columbia 1984)

Great right-winger movie! Three scientists are kicked out of a liberal university and start a small business together. The plan? Catch ghosts terrorizing New York City! Business is slow at first, but then they hit the big time, until a snobbish government official from the EPA demands to shut off the storage facility holding the poltergeists!
