Zombieland (Columbia 2009)

Ok.

Well, it may be a stretch to call the horror-comedy Zombieland a "conservative" flick, but...

1. It is a story about survival.

2. It has guns...lots and lots of guns.

3. This movie may be the key to living or dieing during an actual zombie attack.

For instance, here is a good rule that you should probably remember and follow...

Rule 4: Doubletap: Carrying a gun is a great idea but it should never be your primary weapon. When you do end up using it for that last minute 'oh s--t' moment remember to double tap. Its an emergency and thats why your using it and not your cricket bat so why skimp? One bullet more in the head will go a long way to ensuring your survival.

Folks, this movie is funny. I mean REAL funny! If you can stand the gore you'll make it through Zombieland and become a fan. I can almost guarantee there will be sequel in the near future.

The horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-toting, zombie-slaying' bad ass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.

Gattaca (Columbia 1997)

There is no gene for the human spirit.

What a great tag line...and what a great movie! This science-fiction thriller will have you asking tons of questions at the end! Is this where we are heading with science and technology? Who really can define a person's potential?

Here is a review from Wesley J. Smith, senior fellow at the Discovery Institute.

In this science-fiction drama, Vincent (Ethan Hawke) can’t become an astronaut because he’s genetically unenhanced. So he purchases the identity of a disabled athlete (Jude Law), with calamitous results. The movie is a cautionary tale about the progressive fantasy of a eugenically correct world — the road to which is paved by the abortion of Down babies, research into human cloning, and “transhumanist” dreams of fabricating a “post-human species.” Biotechnology is a force for good, but without adherence to the ideal of universal human equality, it opens the door to the soft tyranny of Gattaca and, ultimately, the dystopian nightmare of Brave New World.

The Pursuit of Happyness (Columbia 2006)

Special thanks to AOW for this suggestion.

Well, I'm back for another year of conservative movies, and this is a great one to kick the whole thing off! The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith would make a great movie to rent this weekend if you haven't seen it yet! Here is the review from IMDb...

In 1981, in San Francisco, the smart salesman and family man Chris Gardner invested the family savings in Ostelo National bone-density scanners, an apparatus twice more expensive than x-ray with practically the same resolution. The white elephant financially breaks the family, bringing troubles to the relationship with his wife that leaves him and moves to New York. Without money and wife, but totally committed with his son Christopher, Chris sees the chance to fight for a stockbroker internship position at Dean Witter, disputing for one career in the end of six months training period without any salary with other twenty candidates. Meanwhile, homeless, he has all sorts of difficulties with his son.

When you're watching this movie, put yourself in Chris Gardner's shoes. What would you do? Would you call it quits and take the government check? Pretty tempting, right? Be another victim of those waskilly rich people? Or would you hunker down and be a great example to a loved one and show them that hard work, not government, leads to HAPPYNESS :O) .

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Columbia 1939)

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington now replaces Dumbo as the oldest conservative film to be reviewed on ECM! If you folks have never seen Mr. Smith, you're missing a great film about a man standing up to a corrupt government and a twisted media.

Whew! Glad things like this don't happen anymore, right?

Sound like a movie up your alley? You better believe it!

Here are some interesting facts about this movie when it was released in 1939...

It was bitterly denounced by Washington insiders angry at its allegations of corruption, yet banned by fascist states in Europe who were afraid it showed that democracy works.

The Washington press corps were highly indignant at the way they were portrayed in the film. Consequently a great deal of the initial reviews from the capitol were very negative. One of their chief objections was that the film made them all out to be drinking too much.

One of the real senators from Montana walked out of the screening he attended in disgust.

In 1942, when a ban on American films was imposed in German-occupied France, the title theaters chose Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) for their last movie before the ban went into effect. One Paris theater reportedly screened the film nonstop for thirty days prior to the ban.

The film was banned in Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Soviet Russia and Falangist Spain. According to Frank Capra, the film was also dubbed in certain European countries to alter the message of the film so it conformed with official ideology.

I am proud to say that Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is the Edge Conservative Movie of the Week!

The Guns of Navarone (Columbia 1961)

I finally got a chance to sit down and watch for the first time the World War II classic The Guns of Navarone, starring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, and David Niven. This is a great movie if you're a war buff or just like a good action/suspense movie! The Guns of Navarone is based on events during the The Battle of Lerosis the central event of the Dodecanese Campaign of WWII.

Here is the review from IMDb...

1943. With the battle of Stalingrad turning the war against them, the Germans are attempting to bully neutral Turkey into joining the Axis; to this end they have trapped 2,000 British soldiers on Kiros, an island in the Aegean, with only one sea route for evacuation, a sea route commanded by two gigantic German antiship batteries deployed in a massive cliffside bunker on the island of Navarone. Immune to air attack and too much for Allied battleships to suppress, the British muster Keith Mallory, a commando officer who has been working on occupied Crete for nearly two years and who is an expert mountaineer, to ferry a team of British commandos to the only area of Navarone that is not monitored by the Germans, a 400-foot cliff. Greek resistance is to meet the team inland and guide them around German patrols to the area of the German guns. However, the commanding officer of the British team suffers grave injury in the climb and Mallory must take control of the mission, despite clashes with explosives expert John Anthony Miller, who upon the arrival of the night of the raid finds his equipment has been sabotaged, thus exposing a traitor in the team's ranks.

Here is the trailer for the film.

Spider-Man (Columbia 2002)

What kind of superpower would you like to have? Some might say super strength or being able to fly. How would you use it? Stop terrorists? Border jumpers? Commies? Hillary? All of the above?

If most of us were completely honest, we would do the very thing the hero did in this tale. Use your new power to make money! But as the tag line for this film says..."With great power comes great responsibility..."

Again, here is the movie review from IMDB...

A rather odd thing has just occurred in the life of Peter Parker: after being bitten by a genetically modified spider, his body chemistry is altered muta-genically. He can now scale walls and ceilings, he has superhuman strength and super-fast reflexes, and he develops a precognitive sense that warns him of approaching danger.

Adopting the name Spider-Man, Peter first uses his newfound powers to make money, but after his uncle is murdered at the hands of a criminal Peter failed to stop, he swears to use his powers to fight the evil that killed his uncle. At the same time, scientist and businessman Norman Osborn, after exposure to an experimental nerve gas, develops an alternate personality himself: the super-strong, psychotic Green Goblin!

Peter Parker must now juggle three things in his life: his new job at a local newspaper under a perpetually on-edge employer (who runs stories degrading Spider-Man's heroics), his battle against the evil Green Goblin, and his fight to win the affections of beautiful classmate Mary Jane Watson, against none other than his best friend Harry Osborn, son of Norman Osborn! Is this challenge too much for even the Amazing Spider-Man to handle?

Doing the right thing, making sacrifices, fighting the press and fighting evil...sounds like a guy I know...minus the red and blue tights of course.

Check out Spider-Man 2 & 3 also!

Here is an interesting trailer from Spider-Man that featured the World Trade Center. Of course after 9/11 this trailer and the scene were both pulled from the original cut.

Here is a scene from Spider-Man 3. Pretty cool!

Stripes (Columbia 1981)

So I'm having lunch today talking about my blog and my buddy brings up the movie Stripes and then it hits me! THAT'S IT! That should be the Edge Conservative movie of the week! I mean where else do you hear lines like this...

We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans. With a capital "A", huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts. We're soldiers, but we're American soldiers! We've been kicking ass for 200 years! We're 10-and-1!
After losing his job, girlfriend, and apartment John Winger (Bill Murray) feels that he needs to reevaluate his life and get back into shape...and he thinks the military has all the answers. So he convinces his friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) that they both should join the United States Army.

Thinking this experience will be like a few days at a health spa, the boys instantly cross hairs with the crusty Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates). Unfortunately for Hulka he has his hands full with other screw-ups in the regiment such as Dewey 'Ox' Oxberger played by the late John Candy. Murray's character eventually becomes the unofficial platoon leader and leads the misfits to a memorable graduation!

Oh and did I mention they kick some Commie Red ass at the end? Good flick, if you haven't seen it, rent it!

You know...I'm stuck in a dead end job...hmmmm...

How's it goin', Eisenhower?

Ghostbusters (Columbia 1984)

Great right-winger movie! Three scientists are kicked out of a liberal university and start a small business together. The plan? Catch ghosts terrorizing New York City! Business is slow at first, but then they hit the big time, until a snobbish government official from the EPA demands to shut off the storage facility holding the poltergeists!

Here is the trailer...
