Doc Hollywood (Warner Bros. 1991)

I love the south! Born and raised in North Carolina!

Southerners are always the butt of jokes...and sometimes we deserve it. Ever go into the Wal-Mart in Boone, NC for instance? Like a whole 'nother universe my friend.

Sadly, the south that I know and love is slowly fading away and along with it the values are too. Small towns such as the one I grew up in have gangs now...that's right...GANGS! WTH is that all about?

Doc Hollywood is a very good film that honestly I totally forgot about until I saw that it was being shown on TV. Yes, it does pokes fun at the south, but watch how southern conservative values trump the left coast and win in the end! This film could also mark Michael J. Fox's last good movie.

This movie does have a nude scene and I believe the f-bomb is dropped a few times too, so beware if the kiddies are around!

Benjamin Stone is a young doctor driving to L.A where he was offered a new job as a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. He gets off the highway to avoid a traffic jam, but gets lost and ends up crashing into a fence in the small town of Grady, South Carolina. He is sentenced to 32 hrs of community service at the local hospital. All he wants is to serve the sentence and get moving, but gradually the locals become attached to the new doctor, and he falls for the pretty ambulance driver, Lou. Will he leave?

The Blind Side (Warner Bros. 2009)

Rent it this weekend! You won't regret it!

Based on a true story...

It's hard to figure Hollywood out isn't it?

They want to preach their liberal ideas, but when they want to make money or (clearing my throat) get Academy Awards...they produce a film like The Blind Side.

Sandra Bullock plays the role of a very right wing, gun totin', NRA supportin' Christian lady who really doesn't take a lot crap from anyone...even her husband played by Tim McGraw. McGraw plays a man that has made his fortune in owning several fast food restaurants.

So libs would think this couple would be the last family on "Erf" that would let an enormous homeless black teenager in their house right?

Right?

But they did!

Now I could tell by watching the movie the writers wanted to add at least some jabs to the GOP in the film. A little bust on Bush there and Kathy Bates playing the liberal Democrat tutor for the kid here. However, the viewer can not escape it. The values from this loving family overwhelm the giant teenager and bring him into a new family and a new life!

What I love about this film the most is seeing this well to do family opening their heart up to this kid. It's like someone told me once...

When you help someone out because you want to, you're being selfish in a way. You're really helping YOU out!

Here is the summary from IMDb...

"The Blind Side" depicts the story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.

THX 1138 (1971 Warner Bros.)

"What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?"

Imagine hearing a computer voice saying "What's wrong?" each and every time you go to your medicine cabinet.

Imagine a society where you health records and medication are 100% controlled by the government.

Oh yah, NOW we're getting scary.

George Lucas' Sci-Fi/Horror classic THX 1138 is a great conservative film about a small group of people who dare to take on a controlling and cruel government.

I have to say I think Lucas was a conservative. He had to be. Whether if he is now or not I just don't know. However, when you consider the values that this film and the Star Wars Saga (Episodes 4 & 5 in particular) no one can deny the anti-government theme they possess.

Now, I'm not gonna lie to ya'. This is a weird ass flick and at times kinda hard to follow. I wouldn't suggest it for a date movie by any means and keep the kids in bed too. However, give it a chance, I think you will be surprised.

Here is the review from IMDb...

The human race has been relocated to a underground city located beneath the Earth's surface. In the underground city, the population are entertained by holographic TV which broadcasts sex and violence and robotic police force enforces the law. In the underground city, society controls all life, all citizens are drugged to control their emotions and their behavior and sex is a crime. Factory worker THX-1138 stops taking the drugs and he breaks the law when he finds himself falling in love with his room-mate LUH 3417 and is imprisoned when LUH 3417 is pregnant. Escaping from jail with illegal programmer SEN 5241 and a hologram named SRT, THX 1138 goes in search of LUH 3417 and escape to the surface, whilst being pursued by robotic policemen.

Here is the trailer...

If the letters THX look familiar to you...there's a good reason!

Tom Horn (Warner Bros. 1980)

If you've watched The Dark Knight and understood the conservative theme that movie had, I think you will really enjoy the 1980 western Tom Horn starring Steve McQueen. The accuracy of the movie is a little off, but it's a great story and I just had to make it the Movie of the Week!

Horn asks that nagging question we all are afraid to answer. Why do we hate those who rid us of our demons?

Here is the film review from IMDb...

A renowned former army scout is hired by ranchers to hunt down rustlers but finds himself on trial for the murder of a boy when he carries out his job too well. Tom Horn finds that the simple skills he knows are of no help in dealing with the ambitions of ranchers and corrupt officials as progress marches over him and the old west.

Heartbreak Ridge (Warner Bros. 1986)

Great conservative anti-commie movie here folks! If you haven't seen this one you've been missing out! And wouldn't ya' know it? It's on National Review's list of conservative movies!

Here is the review from James G. Lakely, managing editor of InfoTech & Telecom News at the Heartland Institute.

Clint Eastwood’s foul-mouthed Marine sergeant Tom Highway makes quick work of kicking Communist Cubans out of Grenada. And, boy, does “Gunny” hate Commies. Not only does he kill quite a few, he also refuses a bribe of a Cuban cigar, saying: “Get that contraband stogie out of my face before I shove it so far up you’re a** you’ll have to set fire to your nose to light it.” A welcome glorification of Reagan’s decision to liberate Grenada in 1983, the film also notes how after a tie in Korea and a loss in Vietnam, America can finally celebrate a military victory. Eastwood, the old war horse, walks off into retirement pleased that he’s not “0–1–1 anymore.” Semper Fi. Oo-rah!

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Warner Bros. 1991)

One of the greatest misconceptions about the story of Robin Hood is that "he stole from the rich and gave to the poor!" Well, that's only partly true...especially when you consider why the people were poor.

Government.

Therefore, Robin Hood was a great conservative story, and also a pretty good movie starring Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

After being captured by Turks during the Crusades, Robin of Locksley and a Moor, Azeem, escape back to England where Azeem vows to remain until he repays Robin for saving his life. Meanwhile, Robin's father has been murdered by the Sheriff of Nottingham and when Robin returns home he vows to avenge his father's death. Even though Marian, his childhood friend, cannot help him, he escapes to the Forest of Sherwood where he joins a band of exiled villagers and becomes their leader. With their help he attempts to cleanse the land of the evil that the Sheriff has spread.

Watchmen (Warner Bros./Fox 2009)

I'm reading the graphic novel now! Looks pretty cool! Hopefully Fox and Warner Bros. can settle their dispute!

The Dark Knight (Warner Bros. 2008)

Why do we do it? I guess we've all done it, right?

We sometimes...not always... look down on those who make our lives easier. The policeman. The soldier. The sailor. The Marine. We make fun of them. We put ourselves on a pedestal and look down our noses. We don't mean to do it, we just do...because it gives a good laugh at a party...or something.

The bottom line is this. Most people (not all) hate others who rid them of their demons. On September 12th, 2001 everyone was on the same page. Everyone got behind our troops and our president, remember?

"Let's go get the bad guys! Let's rid the world of terrorism. We can do it!"

But then the war began, and people got a front row seat 24 hours a day 7 days of week. Suddenly, our troops were the bad guys and the terrorist were misunderstood. Now, my liberal friends have turned their eyes away from the miltary they once supported...don't believe me? Remember John Kerry's comments? People who join the military are suckers...according to Kerry. So I guess if we just leave them alone...if WE just change, we can bring hope to our enemies. Right.

What I find so humorous is how many libs actually love The Dark Knight! It tells the very same true story! Batman is Gotham's only hope to stop the Joker's terrorism, and what do the citizens demand? They demand Batman give into to the Joker's demands! Just admit you were wrong and the Joker will stop his evil ways and we will all get along.

Now, I'm not the first person who thinks The Dark Knight is a conservative flick. If you can't take my word for it, maybe you can take hers!

It's not a kid's movie, so make sure they're in bed when you guys rent it! Oh and guess what?! It's out on DVD this Tuesday!!

Oh, and if you love good music check out Edge's Movie Music
and scroll to the bottom for a few tunes from the movie!
You're gonna love it! If you saw the Batman Begins you'll love this one!

Trouble Along the Way (Warner Bros. 1953)

Well, my depression state hit an all time new low this weekend watching my guys get their asses destroyed by another subpar team. The old guy who sits beside me at the stadium every year said it best, "We started off great but we knew there would be trouble along the way." And that's the story how Trouble Along the Way starring John Wayne and Donna Reed became the Edge Conservative Movie of the Week!

A lot of times I hear my friends with kids say I would do anything for my son or daughter. If that's true with you, then you should enjoy this week's movie!

You know, sometimes we ask a lot out of people. Sometimes we ask things or expect things that are almost impossible (no comments about ECU from the peanut gallery!). We ask our elected officials to fix our problems, and when they fall short...well...they're the biggest SOB's that ever lived...even if we voted for them.

Ex-football coach Steve Williams (Wayne) is going through a terrible divorce. He is seeking custody of his little girl, but with no job he has almost no hope of keeping her...or seeing her again.

Williams meets Father Burke (Coburn) who runs a small Catholic College in New York. The college is very poor and will be closing its doors unless it can bring in revenue in a hurry! Burke hires Williams to coach the football team, revitalize the program and bring interest back to the failing school, but the team is undermanned and has zero talent.

Oh and did I mention that Father Burke went over Williams head and constructed the most difficult football schedule ever for 1953? VS. Santa Clara? VS. Villanova? VS. Notre Dame?

If the school closes, the students will leave, Williams is out of the job and will lose his daughter. The only way for Williams to have instant success with these huge expectations is to start bending some recruiting rules...which he regrettably does.

Maybe it's a stretch that this movie is conservative, but I liked it. It's a good comedy/drama about a parent that would do anything to keep their kid...even if it means getting really dirty.

Island in the Sky (Warner Bros. 1953)

You're down.

You're cold.

You're alone.

You're scared.

Now...how will you survive?

The Edge Conservative Movie of the Week, Island in the Sky starring John Wayne and James Arness is a true story about survival, courage, friendship and faith!

This has to be one of the best unknown John Wayne films of all time, and there's a reason. John Wayne, in this movie, is not John Wayne! Now, I'm not gonna explain any further. I'll just leave it at that, but you have to watch the film to find out what I mean, and trust me it will be worth it! He's still the hero, he still gets it done, but just watch! This may be John Wayne's best acting job!
Here's the plot from IMDb!

A simple group of commercial flyers, post WWII, one plane is downed in uncharted Canadian tundra, dead of winter, wicked cold. Limited resources. Other pilots start a search. Simple, huh? Remember...No GPS, No Radar, Limited radio and supplies! And that relentless bitter cold! But wait. These aren't ordinary commercial pilots. We soon learn these guys have some real history, military types, probably in WWII. They're tight, driven and fearless, and they're gonna find and rescue The Duke and his crew if it kills them! Like a fine wine, what starts out as a simple story draws us into the lives of these fine men, and their families as well. Before you know it, your heart is racing, and the tears are flowing! Perhaps an overused cliche, but truly, they just don't make films like this anymore! What's more, you get to see James Arness cry! Real men, these.

It's the Duke vs. Mother Nature, and folks...Mother Nature's REALLY pissed!

Here's the trailer from the movie!

Firefox (Warner Bros. 1982)

Well we've covered John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Charlton Heston...most of the traditional good ol' Hollywood stars, but what about Clint Eastwood?

Before there was Top Gay there was Firefox! I watched Firefox last night, which Eastwood not only starred but directed, and I thought it was a pretty cool flick, although sometimes I wasn't quite sure about Eastwood's Russian sort-of accent. But I got over it and the plot goes simply like this...

Mitchell Gant (Clint Eastwood) is a retired US Air Force Major, suffering from stress due to being a POW during the Vietnam war. He has been recruited by NATO to steal the Firefox from the Soviets. The Firefox is the fastest, deadliest war plane ever made. It can reach speeds of up to Mach 6 and its weapons can be controlled by the pilots thoughts...but only Russian thoughts! The US understands the threat the Firefox poses and will do whatever it takes to steal the technology.

Here is the trailer from Firefox!

The Spirit of St. Louis (Warner Bros. 1957)

Here's a cool movie fact! James Stewart was 47 years old when he played the part of Charles Lindbergh in the movie The Spirit of St. Louis. The real Charles Linbergh was 27 when he made his memorable flight!

Why did this movie make the ECM movie of the week? When presented a challenge, Americans never quit! The very thought of a plane making a trip from New York to Paris was unthinkable! But leave it to American to lead the way with guts, smarts and even a little faith! Interestingly, Lindbergh during the better part of the film, was portrayed as a non-believer. Read the text from the movie below...

Father Hussman: How come I never see you around church? You don't believe?
Charles Lindbergh: Well, yes, I believe. I believe in an instrument panel, a pressure gauge, a compass, things I can see and touch. I can't touch God.
Father Hussman: You're not supposed to! He touches you!

Here is a brief movie summary from IMDb below.

Biography of Charles Lindbergh from his days of precarious mail runs in aviation's infancy to his design of a small transatlantic plane and the vicissitudes of its takeoff and epochal flight from New York to Paris in 1927.

This a cool flick, especially for you flyers out there! You won't regret this one!

Here is some REAL footage of the flight!

More footage! Landing in Paris!

Memphis Belle (1990 Warner Bros.)

If you're looking for a great blood and guts movie about WWII, look no further that the Memphis Belle! Occasionally, this film will be shown on cable or satellite, but if you have a chance RENT IT! You won't be dissappointed!

It's May 17, 1943; the day before the Memphis Belle's, a B-17 bomber, 25th and final mission. After their final mission, they crew of ten men get to go home. Since they would be the first crew to finish all 25 missions in the 8th Airforce, there were already plans to make the 10-man crew big stars back home for the war effort. But the mission hadn't been flown yet. With the target being Bremen (not Dresden), which was a target heavy in surface-to-air artillery, the flak wouldn't be easy to get through. With weather, nerves, and dreams all playing a part in the finishing of the mission, the crew has to become the lead plane in the squadron and get the job done of bombing a Nazi supply factory, if they get it wrong, many innocent people could be killed.

COOL LINK ABOUT THE MEMPHIS BELLE!!!

I can't blame a guy for wanting to turn back! These guys were heading into the jaws of Satan himself if you ask me!

Memphis Belle with a little Pirate spice! ARRRGH!

We Are Marshall (Warner Bros. 2006)

What happens when you don't cut and run? What happens if you fight like all hell instead? Marshall University found out and their story is the ECM Movie of the Week.

We Are Marshall begins on a serious note with tragedy interspersed with sport. A plane returning from Greenville, North Carolina crashed into a mountain near Huntington, West Virginia. Everyone aboard perished...players, coaches and fans of the Marshall University Football team. The entire town is absolutely devastated. The school's board of directors decide to put an end to the program before one of the players (who remained in Huntington) intervenes. He finds support in the entire town and also Marshall's President Donald Dedmon.

After much hard work, Dedmon finds Jack Lengyel to be the new Thundering Herd coach. But winning isn't easy...and the cut and run option looks very VERY inviting...sound familiar?

Even if you're not a football fan you'll love this movie! Here is the trailer!

Good video I found.

300 (Warner Bros. 2007)

I'm trying really hard to keep the movies on this blog with some sort of an American theme. The following movie has nothing to do with the good ol' U.S. of A, but rest assure. You're not going to find too many libs that are gonna like this flick, which I suppose is the ultimate reason why 300 made the list this week on ECM.

300, starring Gerald Butler as Spartan King Leonidas, is a retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, when 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his gigantic Persian Army. While watching this film, it's very hard to ignore the parraells between this story and our country's current situation with the War on Terror.
King Leonidas and Sparta face a brutal, ruthless enemy.

Spartan council members choose not to support the King in fighting the Persians.

Some members are traitors and go as far as to meet with the Persians, of course without the approval of the King.

Despite the lack of support from the council, the King realizes that their foolishness will cost the lives of many Spartans.

The King and his 300 loyal warriors pursue the enemy and protect their country's freedom.
The special effects and the way the film was produced is tremendous, but I have to give you guys a warning...it's pretty dadgum violent, so make sure the kiddies are out of the room! My only wish is that I saw it in the theater. This is a great movie with a strong conservative message about evil. Find it...and kill it.

Here is the trailer from 300.

Big Jim McLain (Warner Bros. 1952)

To my father, politics are very simple. If the Democrats are for it, he must be against it. If the Democrats are against it, well...then he must be for it. Sometimes this formula works well in picking out films with conservative themes too. And if ever there was a movie a lib would love to hate, may I introduce you to the 1952 classic Big Jim McLain.

John Wayne plays McLain, a tough as nails US House of Un-American Activities investigator sent to Hawaii with his partner Mal Baxter (James Arness) to bust a crime ring run by Communists. Al Napier (Alfred from Batman) plays the role of the red-ringleader, Sturak. In the story, McLain falls for Nancy Vallon, played by actress Nancy Olson, who helps the Duke find information about Sturak and the Commie's evil plans.

I'll be the first one to admit it, this ain't John Wayne's best film. Wayne claimed that the movie helped re-elect Joe McCarthy to the Senate in 1952. Of course, the McCarthy hearings were soon to follow and innocent American lives were destroyed. If there was a lesson learned from McCarthyism, it should be the fact that always trusting your friendly government is a BIG mistake. I can't dispute that this was one of the most unfortunate and embarrassing times in our country's history.

However, I also believe Big Jim McLain is an important conservative film because it does spell out who the bad guys are...da' commies and Wayne's character must defeat THEM!

Over time we have allowed the word McCarthyism to become a battle cry for our most dangerous enemies whether it's communists or terrorists. It has given THEM the ability to maneuver and plot against the very freedoms we all hold so dear. Instead of stopping an enemy dead in his or her tracks, today we have politicians, educators, and entertainers that basically say, "Yep, they have the right to kill us all!" Now, some libs will call this paranoia, I call it a fact and I can find a list of over 3000 dead Americans to prove it!

As I mentioned before this isn't a great film. The extras who were told to act natural seemed more interested staring into the camera. However, when you finish watching the movie, especially if you're a conservative, you have to smile and say, "Damn, why can't they make a movie like that anymore?"

Here are some other interesting facts about Big Jim McLain I found on-line .

Nancy Olson hated the script but she figured six weeks in Hawaii and a chance to work with an icon like Wayne seemed a good enough reason to accept. Besides, she thought the film would flop and nobody would see it. She didn't count on the constant TV exposure the film has had and says people stop her all the time to say they've seen her in the film. Olson, a staunch liberal Democrat, said she and Wayne would often have political arguments but she would always let Wayne have the last word.

The German title is "Mathuana". In this dubbed version for the German market John Wayne plays a hunter of drug smugglers, not an investigator for the Un-American Activities Commitee as in the original film.

The first film produced by Wayne-Fellows Productions (later renamed Batjac Productions), John Wayne's independent production company.

Unfortunately, I could not find any clips from Big Jim McLain on YouTube. But never fear! Here are a few John Wayne clips I think you will all enjoy!

Superman (Warner Bros. 1978)

Superman is one of those great conservative stories that if you give the Hollywood libs and Democrats long enough they'll ruin it forever.

THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN AND DORKBOY!

After watching the film Superman (and I going to assume that most people have either seen the film or at least know the comic book story) isn't it strange that his parents who were living on this doomed planet "Krypton" with all of its technological space advancements chose the evil, blood-thirsty, decrepit, Jesus-loving, money grubbing country the United States for their son to be brought up in? Now come on! They could have landed him anywhere!

And in Kansas? KANSAS? A RED STATE? Why didn't they land him in Berkeley, California or Madison, Wisconsin? I can hear a lib now...Well, that's where all the trouble is in this country! No it's not! He needed to learn what was so damn great about his new country FIRST and why it was so important to defend!

We don't teach these things much anymore. As a matter of fact, there is a growing desire in this country to do the very opposite. If anyone has seen Superman Returns (see clip below) apparently even the greatest super hero in the world doesn't stand for "truth justice and the American way" anymore.

Someone might say, Well isn't Superman an illegal alien? Look man, any guy who can fly around and put the roof of the White House back on after beating the crap out of Zod and his evil henchmen gets my vote for citizenship. When these border-jumpers can do that with Al-Qadea I'll buy them all a Dos Equis or Corona or whatever the heck their drinking.

My advice, stay way from Superman Returns (2006) and check out the original 1978 Superman and Superman II (1980).

My sister still loves the part where he smiles at the end.

Rio Bravo (Warner Bros. 1959)

Watch Rio Bravo and then High Noon, and tell me what big story differences stand out to you the most. In one movie the town supports its sheriff of ridding the area of scumbags. The other town wusses out and expects the outgunned lawman to do all the work.

If I was doing a blog on liberal movies, High Noon would be up there in my top 5, which is a shame because I really like Gary Cooper. Rio Bravo on the other hand, which stars my hero John Wayne, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan is an instant classic conservative western. Wayne's character, John T. Chance, is the kind of guy who wants to do things on his own and usually refuses the help he's offered by his pals. Did I mention Martin's character is a drunk and Brennan is an old cripple?

In this scene Wayne tracks down the bad guy in a not so friendly saloon.

I guess it was a good thing for Coop Grace dropped the whole "I'm a afraid of guns" thing, huh?
